Alan Ayckbourn is one of the most prolific and widely performed of English language playwrights and a highly regarded theatre director. Between 1972 and 2009, he was the Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, where he premiered and continues to premiere the majority of his work.

Alan Ayckbourn has written 73 full length plays, more than half of which have gone on to London's West End. He has directed more than 300 plays, including the West End premieres of the majority of his plays, and he has also run his own company at the National Theatre. He is an Olivier and Moliere Award winning playwright whose plays have achieved success throughout the world and in 2009 his contribution to theatre was recognised by the Olivier's Special Award.
